are you sure you know exactly what the

fourth commandment really means when god

says to remember to keep the sabbath day

holy how is it that us christians

believe in all ten commandments but the

fourth commandment seems to be forgotten

well we’re gonna dive into the ancient

hebrew to discover exactly what this

commandment means right after this

hello everyone i’m jim staley passion

for truth ministries and today we’re

going to unpack the real meaning of the

fourth commandment the remember to keep

the sabbath day holy commandment that’s

right we’re going to find out exactly

what the cultural context and language

has to say as it relates to us today

before we do would you do us a favor

would you subscribe to our youtube

channel it’s a great way to promote our

ministry and the message that god’s

given us and turn on those notifications

also don’t forget us over at instagram

where you can get these messages in

bite-sized pieces of about 90 seconds

all right let’s get back to our teaching

for today we’re going to dive into the

fourth commandment it’s found in exodus

chapter 20 and if you could turn there

with me we’re going to answer three main

questions those questions are as follows

number one we’re going to find out

should we even keep this commandment

does it matter at all does the fourth

commandment have any relevance for us

today as believers in christ

number two if it does what day do we

keep it on does it matter which day so

after we discover whether we keep it and

what day it’s on the next an obvious

question is how do we keep it and we’re

going to discuss all of that in the

shortest amount of time possible

in this very short video so let’s begin

number one the word

sabbath is

shabbat

that hebrew word shabbat literally means

to rest it means to cease from all work

let’s see how it’s used in exodus

chapter 1 20 8-11 it says this remember

the sabbath day to keep it holy six days

you shall labor and do all your work but

the seventh day is the sabbath of the

lord your god in it you shall do no work

you nor your son nor your daughter nor

your male servant nor your female

servant nor your cattle nor your

stranger who’s within your gates for in

six days the lord made the heavens and

the earth the sea and everything that’s

in them and rested the seventh day

therefore the lord blessed the sabbath

day and hollowed it you know a couple of

the things that that just dawned on me

as we’re reading this verse is first of

all the very first word is remember

that presupposes that it something

happened before that we forgot

and also the hebrew word for remember is

zakar and zakar literally means to

remember

with a purpose it means it’s not just

like the greek philosophical definition

of the western world where to remember

is oh i remember something no in the

hebrew culture to remember is to do

something so we remember for a purpose

that has an action tied to it and the

action in this particular commandment is

we want to remember the sabbath to keep

it holy so let’s find out exactly why he

wants us to remember it and for that we

go to the same exact set of verses but

we zero in on exodus chapter 20 verse 11

and it says this is why you’re supposed

to remember to keep the sabbath it says

for in six days the lord made the

heavens and the earth the sea and all

that’s in them and rested the seventh

day therefore the lord blessed the

seventh day and hollowed it that word

hallowed is holy it’s kadosh it means to

be set apart it’s different from

everything else it’s set apart my

friends did you know that you’re

different if you believe in yeshua jesus

if you are

if you are saved by his grace and his

grace alone then my friends you are set

apart

for salvation you’re set apart from the

rest of the world you’re not like the

rest of the clay pots you’ve been broken

and you have been remade in the new

creation that’s what the sabbath is to

the rest of the days of the week it’s

special it’s set apart god looks at it

exactly the way he looks at you he

you’re completely different than every

other human that has not accepted the

messiah and that is the sabbath so keep

that in mind that’s how special the

sabbath really is matthew 24 20

pray that your flight may not be in the

winter or on the sabbath for then there

will be great tribulation such as not

been since the beginning of the world

until this time no nor ever shall be so

in the very end of the great tribulation

jesus yeshua is telling his disciples

pray that this this this great

tribulation will will not happen on a

sabbath pray that the flight from

jerusalem won’t happen on a sabbath day

when you’re resting

if the sabbath is not relevant for

believers

then why is jesus talking about the very

end days during the great tribulation

telling his disciples pray

that your flight doesn’t happen on the

sabbath

so

did you know that even the gentiles

are expected to keep the sabbath in the

new testament check this out in acts 15

21 it says for moses had throughout many

generations those who preach him in

every city being read in the synagogues

every sabbath

that james the president of the

jerusalem council is making a ruling and

saying hey i want you to do these four

things because they’ll learn the rest

in

church

every saturday every shabbat every

sabbath they will be in the synagogue

and they will learn the rest of what

they’re supposed to learn in the

meantime

they need to only practice these four

things

james’s expectation is the gentiles

would be meeting in the sabbath every

single week and we see that because the

gentiles even say that they can’t wait

for paul to come back the next sabbath

so they can hear him preach

so we’re learning this as we learn this

let’s dive into these three questions

beginning with the first one which is

should we even keep it does it matter

should we keep any of the ten

commandments

i think asking the question should we

keep the sabbath today is quite frankly

an absurd question that’s like saying

should we only serve one god should we

honor our parents today should we commit

adultery or not commit adultery ladies

and gentlemen can i just submit to you

that we don’t have to do anything

there’s no commandment that says you

have to keep the commandments

he just says i set before you blessings

and curses

blessings if you keep my commandments

curses if you don’t that’s in

deuteronomy 11

26-27 it’s our choice god gives us free

will he gives us the opportunity to

choose whether we’re going to serve him

or not serve him and our reward and

blessing and fulfillment in life is in

direct proportion to our obedience

that’s why he says he’d rather have

obedience then sacrifice

because obedience is the only way that

we can prove that we love him that comes

from 1st john chapter 5 verse 3 here is

the love of god those who keep his

commandments and his commandments are

not burdensome we’re going to talk about

how to do this in just a moment so just

hold on

you know one of the things i like to say

a lot is this

if the commandment if keeping this

shabbat the sabbath

brings a blessing

then not keeping it brings a curse but

wait a minute sometimes the greatest

curse

is not what you can see

it’s the blessing that you didn’t even

know you missed

i don’t know about you but i’ve got six

daughters

and my i have more than one that were a

surprise

and i can tell you that if if they

weren’t here if the ones that were

surprises

weren’t here

i wouldn’t even know the absolute

incredible blessings

that i would have missed

but because they are here i do know the

blessing that they are

in the same way when we choose to keep

the sabbath when we try to remember it

and do our best to honor god and set it

apart because quite frankly it was made

for us the blessings right there

when we start to receive the blessing

that has been locked up

from the very moment that we were born

you’ll never know

what you ever did without it

my friends the next question as we know

you can keep it or not keep it but we

should

because god said so it should be good

enough for us

is what day is it on i’m going to submit

to you the answer is right here in the

verse let’s go back to it exodus 20

verse 8 says remember the sabbath day to

keep it holy

six days you shall labor and do all your

work but watch this on the seventh day

is the sabbath of the lord your god now

god says the sabbath is on the seventh

day

who are we to say

we can do it whenever we want who are we

to tell god that we can keep the sabbath

on the first day or the fourth day or

the seventh day seventh eighth day it

doesn’t matter what day you want to

choose god said

the sabbath is on the seventh day

we can’t question that no more than why

why can we only have one wife

right god says it’s good for man to not

be alone and to have a wife he doesn’t

say that you you should have 10 wives

god said it we believe it and that’s it

if you are a true believer in the word

of god so why don’t most christians keep

the sabbath and if they do they keep it

on the first day of the week sunday why

is it that

if anybody keeps the sabbath quite

frankly in traditional christianity we

keep it on sunday where did that come

from let’s turn into

3 21 a.d we got to go all the way back

on the timeline to emperor constantine

of rome

he made an incredibly bold move to

change the sabbath from the existing

biblical day on the seventh day

to the first day of the week called

sun’s day it was the sun god’s day

because most of pagan rome was used to

celebrating and taking their sabbath on

the first day of the week and he wanted

to make it easier for the roman citizens

to convert to christianity so he

compromised and said let’s change it

from the what he considered the jewish

day to the new christian day and

therefore the pagan gentiles of rome who

already didn’t like the jewish people

and were already predisposed to not

doing anything that looked like them

they basically created took the current

messianic jewish

christian religion that christ founded

in the first century and then just

romanized it to make it easier and more

palatable for romans to come to christ

you may think that’s a good thing but

compromise is never a good thing

especially when god lays down an

instruction and we break it in order to

try to lead somebody to christ that’s

like

holding up a centerfold and trying to

get all the guys around you so you can

give them the gospel that is not exactly

how we’re supposed to share the word of

god compromise always leads to a watered

down faith and a watered down faith

leads to a powerless religion

eusebius which was one of constantine’s

court bishops in 338 a.d had this to say

far more pointed all things whatsoever

that was the duty to do on the sabbath

we

have transferred to the lord’s day as

more appropriately belonging to it

my friends did you hear that eusebius is

saying a court bishop of constantine

is making it clear that we are going to

transfer all of the commandments and

instructions for the sabbath from the

biblical sabbath to what they considered

the lord’s day and unfortunately there

is no such terminology in all of the

bible where god calls sunday the lord’s

day there’s only one scripture in the

entire bible that mentions that and

that’s in revelation 3 10. and the

aramaic makes that clear that the lord’s

day was talking about judgment day it’s

not talking about sunday at all

so it seems that god meant what he said

that we’re supposed to keep it but the

next question is is

how what does that look like for today

there’s a lot of different people that

have a lot of different ideas of what

does it mean to keep the sabbath i think

quite frankly

the sabbath is very easy to keep i’ve

been keeping it for many years the

instructions are simple don’t work

don’t have your son or daughter work and

don’t have anybody work for you

that means i can’t go out to dinner i

might want to do that on the saturday

afternoon but i can’t because to do so

would be causing someone else to break

the sabbath and support them now you

might say well they’re going to do it

anyway well

a lot of people are going to do a lot of

stuff anyway that doesn’t mean i support

it or endorse it i have to set myself

apart because this day is set apart and

i live in a set apart system called the

kingdom of god so what does it mean

some say that you can’t do your own

pleasure on the sabbath and they quote

isaiah 58 13 which says this

if you turn away your foot from the

sabbath from doing your own pleasure and

on my holy day and it goes on to say

then i’ll bless you so they say that

we can’t do our own pleasure but what

they don’t know is the word pleasure

there in the hebrew and in the context

is defined in the very same

chapter as actually work it says this in

isaiah 58 3

why have we fasted they say and you have

not seen why have we afflicted our souls

and you take no notice in fact in the

day of your fast you find pleasure

here’s how he defines it

and

exploit all your laborers that word

exploit there means to press hard or to

make your workers work your employees

work in other words it was the pleasure

of the employer to take a day off while

making his people work

in the context it’s very simple is that

the word pleasure there is work men like

to work it’s that simple the chapter is

consistent with the commandment itself

which is revolving around what

ceasing

from work it’s not talking about you

can’t take a bike ride with your with

your son or your daughter you can’t go

to the park or

or whatever but you can’t work and you

can’t cause someone else to work

god is causing this created the sabbath

so that you could draw closer to your

family to creation and to him he’s

trying to unify those three components

and line them up the creator the

creation

and the created the family

some people that do keep the sabbath

keep it so legalistic they it chokes out

the life of the family because it’s all

about this rule and that rule

when the rule is very simple just don’t

work and don’t cause someone else to

work those two categories that’s it

everything else is on the table god

wants to bring life and breathe life

back into your life and the shabbat was

designed for just that imagine sitting

around a table on a friday night because

the days start and sundown to sundown in

the bible so they begin at sundown and

they end it sundown so friday night at

sundown starts the shabbat

sitting around the table with all of

your family everyone is looking forward

to it all week long because they know

that they’re going to have dad’s

attention they’re going to have mom’s

attention they’re going to play family

games maybe watch a documentary or a

movie or or they just spend time

together maybe they have a little bible

study on shabbat we know at our at our

family at three o’clock it’s family

church we’re going to get around we’re

going to read the bible we’re going to

study it for about an hour hour and a

half we’re going to do some worship the

frequency changes

and nobody has any plans it’s family

time sometimes we go to a park maybe we

uh we go and just walk around down with

a riverfront whatever we want to do

that doesn’t revolve around work

buying things or causing somebody else

to work is on the table and i will tell

you it has transformed

our lives without a doubt

in short let me just say this it’s like

celebrating life

before the fall

when man didn’t have to work by the

sweat of his brow and the only thing

that he did

was walk in the cool with god

that’s what the sabbath is all about

it’s like turning back the time clock

going back to the very beginning of time

where man

didn’t have to work super hard there was

no thorns and we just walked in the cool

with the lord on that day

i can tell you it not only has

transformed my family it’s transformed

me as a person because now guess what i

have to do is the priest in my home

we’re having family church i got to

prepare i can’t just take my kids to

church on a sunday morning and just

expect the pastor to teach him the bible

tells me that i’m the pastor of my home

i can still take them to church i can

still have them going to youth group but

at the end of the day i’m the preacher

i’m the pastor i’m the priest and

protector of my home it is my

responsibility to teach them and to

teach them well and shabbat is a

fantastic way to do that

in conclusion i think it’s incredibly

ironic that we as believers have

forgotten the only commandment in the

bible that we are specifically told to

remember

you know if god sits sets apart one

whole day out of creation week and calls

it holy set apart and calls it the

sabbath and we’re supposed to remember

what he did as an example so that we can

do it moving forward if it was good

enough for all the patriarchs for jesus

yeshua himself all the disciples and

keeping it in the millennium if it’s

good from genesis to revelation why is

it not good enough for today

why is it that we’re always trying to

find a way out of doing what god says to

do even when it’s in our best interest

he made this commandment for us there

are blessings that are locked up and

attached prophetically to this

commandment and all he is asking is hey

look when you’re faithful to your wife i

unlock blessings when you only serve the

one true god i unlock blessings when you

honor your parents i unlock and you

qualify for these blessings the sabbath

has got massive blessings attached to it

that are related to the connectivity and

the restoration and the incredible power

of intimacy for your family and we don’t

qualify for them until we actually

remember

and we do

so i encourage you to keep the sabbath

to look into it ask the father how you

can begin to incorporate this into your

life even if it’s just a little bit

maybe it’s just a meal on friday night

maybe just a couple hours on saturday

until you begin to see that god meant

what he said when he said you honor me

and i’ll honor you
